What I’ve Been Doing

Hello everyone, I almost feel like I need to re-introduce myself to you all!!

I thought I’d share a bit about some of the things I’ve been doing lately.  It’s been an exciting week!

I watched my nephew, Ty, show his dairy calf for 4-H.  It brings back memories to my Achievement Day….and that is why I am an Interior Decorator and not a dairy farmer….

4-H4-H

I watched my sister and best friend compete in the Melmerby Triathlon.  This is pretty cool, they do it as a team, so someone swims, someone else bikes and then someone else runs.  I couldn’t swim, I would be the reason why they have the life guards on boards along the swim course….but, I’d consider doing the running….maybe…..with a years warning…..

I dropped my baby off to camp for two nights.  She decided she wanted to go and I think she had fun, regardless of what she states.  She does claim she is never going back since they never served pancakes….so, we’ll see how long that lasts.  She’s already going back this weekend to camp there with my parents.  But Mom promised her pancakes. 🙂

Hannah

While Hannah was away, it meant I had lots of time with Lena.  We drove around the ski hill and looked at the ski chalets, had a picnic and explored some parks.  We also went to the local Farmer’s Market and stopped in at Forbes New to You to see what new goodies they had in. { I left with silverware, a blanket and two chairs to add to my ever growing stash. }

I’ve been working in the studio, getting things ready for our Homegrown Vintage Market on August 8th, too.  Lots of fun projects under way for that!  Hope you’ll stop by to see us on Market Day!

So, that’s what I’ve been up to – how about you? Are you caught up in the fun of summer? What fun things have you been filling your days with?

Mini House Tour

Since my last post was about where we started with this house, I thought I would share a few pictures from around the house as things presently stand.  It takes effort to get the house photo ready!!  After I wrote that last post, I got to cleaning and hired my crew who does ‘Twoonie Tasks’ to get the house ready to take pictures to share.

What is a Twoonie Task you ask?  Just the most genius thing I ever thought of, that’s all.  I yard sale, I drag my girls along who like to shop, too.  So, I decided they need to earn yard sale money, so I invented Twoonie Tasks – small jobs that are worth $2 to me to NOT have to do them myself.  Such as cleaning toilets, sinks or vacuuming.  I’ll gladly pay my children to do them.  🙂  And then they are responsible for having spending money for yard sales.  See? Genius, I tell you!

But that’s not really where I was going with this!!  I get distracted.  Often.  House. Pictures. Tidy.  Right……that’s where I was.  I love this house and how things are coming together.  Things change and develop and pieces get added, plants get moved around and so on.

So – presently – the house looks like this:

{ The cabinet in the right hand corner is new to us!!  I’m excited to get it painted up with some Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint and properly decorated and dressed!  I have to remove the screws in the wall above it and re-hang some artwork, too.  And find homes for a few nests, too……sheesh, it never ends….which I love about decorating my home!! }

My hope is over the next week to document a bit more to show you.  I love having pictures of the house and how things currently are.

I was looking at pictures of our last place HERE and I love how it looks and I know over time our new house will come together and become a cohesive place, too.  Or maybe it is now?  Hard for me to know – I see it through my own eyes and so I can’t tell – so hard to be objective for your own space!!  And maybe I feel like the old space is more cohesive because it was smaller and I’m not used to having more wall space and open areas?

Anyway – I hope you enjoy this mini tour, with more to come!

House-iversary

Well guys, this week marks a year!!  A whole year that we’ve called Clear Day home. I can’t believe what a change from the house we took possession of last July to what we live in today to .  It’s certainly become home.  And we have made it our own!

Here’s a few pictures that remind me of just how far we’ve come!!

We’ve done so much work.  It’s come so far!  It doesn’t even feel like the same house or yard!

But, sigh,  I see how much there is left to do!!  New light fixture in the dining room, a tree to cut down, a tire flower bed { ????? } to get rid of, weeds to pull, lawn to mow….and kitchen that will eventually get completely re-done.  And at that time, we’ll add a light fixture to the front entry. { One of the most annoying things about this house!!! }  Find a rug for the laundry area as well as white cabinets.

But this is home.  Our girls have settled in and we are busy building our lives here.  We are putting down roots and we are leaving our mark here.

The handsome Mr. Byrne has been busy around the yard this past year, taking care of our trees and cleaning up where the old fences were.  He moved piles upon piles of snow this past winter and mows parts of the lawn with his tractor.  I never thought I’d be so thankful to have that little tractor in our garage but man, oh man, what a relief!!  And he loves to be puttering around the yard on it.  It’s the farmer in him. 🙂

So thankful to call this piece of heaven on earth ‘Home’!  I am so appreciative that this is where I live, to everyone who helped make this dream come true.  I fell in love with this place as a teen and now, finally, call it home.

Antique Shops and Yard Sales

yard sale

This weekend is one of the good yard sale weekends in my area….ish.  Every year there is a 75k Yard Sale that runs from Truro to Parrsboro.  I actually don’t live that handy to this but it’s close enough to call it my area-ish.  I’m not sure if I’ve taken this in since Catherine and I went way back a gazillion years ago, like when we were very first friends.  But I wanted to go this weekend and so Michael, Hannah and I headed out.  I wasn’t sure about taking a 5 year old and a husband….but we all come home together again so we’ll call it good! 🙂

We fueled up, both the car and our bellies and headed straight for the gold – the antique shops right in the heart of Great Village.  We started with my favourite, Nesting Antiques.  The antiques are displayed so well and it is such a lovely shop, it is by far my favourite.  Most antique shops I visit are measured against this one.  She has no website or FB page but she did give me her number, so I’ll make another trip up soon and pack my camera, not just my phone.

Then we headed to the other shops right there and then started working our way back to Truro, stopping at some yard sales, bypassing others.  The driving is crazy, vehicles parked everywhere and stopping at a moments notice.  We took my car even though it would’ve made more sense to have a truck in case we saw something large we had to have, but I knew it would be nuts and that truck is long and awkward { well, if I’m behind the wheel, anyway } so with only one girlie and an empty trunk, we did okay!

Hannah was adorable shopping today.  It is so easy for kids to want everything they see while out and about at yard sales.  But Hannah decided she only wanted to buy finger puppets.  Ah, sounds great, Hannah, they’ll be inexpensive and small, PERFECT!  But then she saw the tiniest little dog stuffie and wanted it.  I couldn’t say no, she had a dollar with her 😉 and so she went to find out the price.  If you’ve seen Hannah, you know she’s a charmer….so she walked away with the little dog AND her dollar!  { Thank you, kind Quilt People!! }

yard sale

Further down the road and she spots something else, with a price tag of $1 on it.  She picks it up and Daddy asks if she’s sure she wants it, seems random to him, I guess, but I loved that she wanted it.  It was a small copper bowl.  So, again, we walk up to the sellers and the elderly lady asks if Hannah thinks it’s worth a dollar, Hannah nods and then the lady strikes a deal, Hannah will get the bowl and some change – did Hannah think that would be okay?  Away Hannah went with her little bowl and 2 quarters.  Her final purchase was a $2 globe piggy bank.  She’s pleased as punch with the deals she got and enjoyed her day with us….I think!

yard sale

Here is what I scored today { my total was a little higher than Hannah’s….;) }

yard sale

Three teeny, tiny wooden shoes – a pair of unfinished wooden ones and a tiny, lonely delft blue one!  Have I mentioned I love wooden shoes??

yard sale

An old grater.  I saw one used as an earring display….thought I might transform this one!

yard sale

Two folding rulers to add to my growing collection.  I love these things!

yard sale

Seven decorative spoons to be made into earrings.  I love that three of them have writing or designs in the bowl, will make for interesting sets of earrings! Anyone been to Kenya???

yard sale

A piece of Nova Scotia pottery.  I absolutely love the colour!! I had a hard time deciding which to get, there were three different sizes in this colour.  I adore pottery!

yard sale

Two retro bowls.  I bought them thinking they would go directly for the Homegrown Vintage Market, but I like them….so we’ll have to see!

yard sale

Three dishclothes.  I don’t crochet.  I love these dish clothes.  And then!!!  And then!!!! I saw this scrubbie!  Just a small thing crocheted with some kind of netting/mesh woven in!  Genius, I tell you!!  Can’t wait to try it out!

yard sale

My biggest purchase of the day – an Eastlake parlour chair.  It may or may not have tape on one corner, but it isn’t as if I was keeping the fabric, anyway.  And I got it from the sweetest guy, some people are just so friendly and engaging.  The chair is in great shape, it doesn’t need anything in terms of repairs or paddings, so a lick of paint and new fabric and it’s market ready!

Alright, that ‘s the scoop on that part of my day!  Tonight I was street side for our local Lobster Carnival Parade – maybe I’ll share those pictures tomorrow!

Happy Yard Saling to those heading out tomorrow!!

Terra and Sylvia – Marco!!!

Lori

PS I didn’t share what Michael bought while tagging along with us because he purchased nothing.  I don’t quite understand that….. 😉

Homegrown Vintage Market

Guys.  I’m so excited.  Remember this day from Instagram?  When I got together with Rose from Onslow Historic Lumber?  And I teased you with hints about the fact we were up to something?

Instagram

Well,  Rose and I are joining forces to bring you the best Market to date!!  It is going to be a blast!  So mark your calendars for August 8th and get ready to shop, be entertained and eat some good food, all in a scenic location of Meadowville!!

Vintage Market Flyer

We are busy lining up vendors who will be offering either handmade items or vintage pieces of goodness.  We have one food truck lined up already and are looking into some fun things for kids to do and some good entertainment, too.  I’m telling you, it’s going to be a blast!

I would highly recommend popping over to Facebook and giving the new page a ‘Like’  HERE so you can stay on top of all the ins and outs of the market!  And then, of course, show up on Market Day, ready to have some fun! We will be introducing our vendors as we secure them, so you’ll know who to look forward to seeing at our Market, too.  We really want to connect awesome sellers with a distinct group of buyers and have fun doing it!!

I’m working in the studio at getting things ready. The painting has started, as well as the  pounding of spoons….and lots of ideas rattling around in my head.  I have a few chairs that I want to re-do, too.  Oh, the To-do list is long!!  And it’s a month away!!  Eeeeek!  I can hardly wait!  I’ll even have a few cool vintage items for sale, too.  Things I bought and don’t use so someone else might as well enjoy the coolness of them!  I need to start sorting things out…..I have boxes of stuff to go through!  Oh my! Pour me a coffee and point me towards the studio!
