Skimbaco, Blogging Friends and Trump

One of the wonderful things about attending events such as Blogjam, is meeting up with people you know from the internet.  Sounds sketchy, eh? I know.  But, let me tell you about this amazing circle of supporters!

The year before last I attended Blogjam and meet up with some amazing people and learned about some great resources for bloggers, bloggers specifically from the East Coast.  Well, I’d be foolish not to tap into that.  So, for the last year or so, I’ve been interacting with and been inspired by this circle of women, with a guy or two thrown in for good measure.  Attending this round of Blogjam was like meeting old friends and expanding my circle of East Coast bloggers.

Right on the heels of Blogjam was an event hosted by one of these bloggers, Katja, who has the blog and online magazine, Skimbaco Lifestyle.  She extended the invitation to come to her home and work on some Christmas crafts and gifts so she could photograph it for the Christmas issue of Skimbaco and we could make some goodies and blog about it all ourselves.  I was quite happy that I was available to go before I even saw what we were doing or before I knew the hospitality that would be offered to us.

I was unfamiliar with the area of the city I was heading that Wednesday morning, so I did what any country folk would do before heading to the big city…I googled where I was going, of course!  One of the nice features of Google Maps is that you can have the street view, so I knew what colour and style the house was that I was looking for, and I couldn’t wait to see more after the tease Google provided.

Katja’s greeting was so warm and welcoming, and her home was just the same.  Katja’s accent made me want to listen to her talk all day!  Her house was very unique and bright, filled with many things with a story and a sense of history.  The south bank of windows, with the woodsy view in the middle of the city was completely enchanting.  It would be fabulous to watch the seasons change from that vantage point.

There were already a few other bloggers there and so we chatted and ohh’ed and aww’ed over this and that.  When everyone arrived, Katja put us to work in the kitchen, whipping up some tasty treats for later in the morning.  And then we started the crafting.  After crafting came making some special bath & beauty products, complete with pretty packaging.  I’ll show you more of all that wonderfulness in another post.

As much fun as we had and as wonderful as the projects were, for me it was connecting and getting to know these personalities that I only really knew from the world-wide web.  And it seemed like we all needed an extra boost on this particular Wednesday, as it was the Wednesday we all woke up to a world were Trump somehow got himself elected to be President.  So to be surrounded by strong, inspiring women who are making a difference in their worlds was exactly what we all needed that morning.  Being spoiled by Katja was the icing on the cake. Speaking of cake….

I’m glad I took the time to drive down to the city and hang out with these amazing people.  They are part of the reason why I plug away here on my blog.  You guys reading this are one of the other reasons, too.  Besides the fact I love to write and tell my stories.  If you love to read blogs, especially blogs with an East Coast spin, you should check out these:

Katja at Skimbaco

Colleen at Curtains Are Open

Laura at Valley Family Fun

Laureen at Tempered With Kindness

Heather at Mmm… is for Mommy

I’m going to slip this little picture in right here:

Colleen and I have the same camera and she picked mine up, not knowing and snapped this picture of Katja and I.  I’m always the one behind the camera { honestly, quite happily, too } but it was a fabulous surprise to find this when I was scrolling through the pictures afterwards!

So, here is to fellow bloggers who are rocking it, to new friends IN REAL LIFE and to making time to create!!  Cheers!!

I’ll follow this post up with a post with some of the fun things we made…hopefully soon!

Friendly Strangers

Sometimes in life, the people who you cross paths with in the virtual world become very important and inspirational people in your life.  And I know I’m not alone in this.  So, I’m going to introduce you to one of those people….Sheila Atchley!

Let me start by telling you how I ‘met’ Sheila.  Do you remember me telling you about sending earrings down to Jeanne Oliver for her first ever workshop at their new home? { You can read about it HERE }  Sheila was there.  She was one of the ladies who received a pair and she reached out to thank me for them.  I got some beautiful messages from some of those ladies.

So, I started following Sheila’s art page on Facebook, which you can do HERE.  Her work spoke to me.  The women created on her easel touched my heart.  I saw myself, my friends, every woman on those canvases. I saw our hurts, our hopes and our potential.  And Sheila’s written words that accommodated her work truly struck a chord with me.

I think once you get to see the soul of the artist through their art and appreciate how much heart they put into it, the potential to be smitten with the artist is quite possible.  And from there, becoming friends is easy.

Sheila Atchley

Sheila’s art would show up in my FB feed regularly and one day, there popped up the most amazing painting of rose, done in shades of cream and grey { See above photo, which doesn’t do it justice at all! }  And the price was fantastic, so I quickly snatched that painting up.   And then I waited for it to arrive…..and I waited and I waited.  Finally, in my impatience, I sent a message to Sheila to see if she had heard anything about it.  Nope, nothing.  So she looked into it, and sure enough, the US Postal system lost it.  I’m not sure who was more broken-hearted over the lost painting, myself or Sheila.

And then, one day I got a slip in the mailbox that I had a parcel in at the post office.  I messaged Sheila right away – nope, she hadn’t heard anything but I promised to message her as soon as I picked up my package.  And lo and behold, it WAS the painting!  Arrived safe and sound and about 3 months after I ordered it.  And all wrapped up so beautifully, too!

Sheila Atchley

Let me tell you it was well worth the wait – it was even more stunning in person than the picture I saw on FB.  Presently, the painting is hanging in my kitchen.  I’m not sure if that’s where it’ll stay or not, but I love getting to see it everyday. { She sells originals and prints of her work, the link to the giclee of this one is HERE }

Following Sheila’s journey means getting to see what she is creating and is involved in, geography alone makes it interesting but she’s at a different stage of life than I am, too.  And frankly, that’s so interesting to see, too.  She is passionate and creative and that combination can manifest itself into amazing things….like, say, a self-published book!  But it isn’t just any book.  It’s a book filled with her art, it’s a book filled with stories of women from the bible who are linked to Jesus.  It is a book for advent, about advent, about the journey of these women.  { You can order a copy HERE }

sheila atchley

I wish I had unlimited funds, I would buy you all copy.  I would place it in your hands, I know you would enjoy it and soak up the words written between the covers.  I know the art would move you.  I know you would see the faces of the women in your lives, maybe you’ll find your face among the pages, hear your story told.  Maybe, just maybe, you’ll find a tiny baby who would come into this world, helpless.  But who would do miracles, touch lives, save us from ourselves.

This is the advent season.  This is the time to quiet our hearts.  This is the time of connecting.  I’m thankful for the people in my life, who I have crossed paths with, even if they are virtual paths, who inspire me and urge me along in my own journey.  Sheila is definitely one of these people.  This advent, I hope you find some friendly strangers along the way who encourage you, inspire you and connect with you.  Be open, be willing and be present.

Facebook And Coffee

Well, I’m back today to tell you that sometimes, and  maybe just sometimes, Facebook contests are real.  And guess what else – real people win!  I’m sure you doubt me.  How ever would I know?  Well, because I won a year’s supply of coffee from a Facebook contest.  But – not any coffee….Aroma Maya coffee.

Now, I didn’t know anything about Aroma Maya coffee, I drove past a sign on my drive to work but that was really all.  Then I noticed something on Facebook about them, read a little to learn more, and decided to start to follow them on Facebook.  A couple days later, they posted a contest to win a year’s supply of coffee, so I entered, of course…..who doesn’t want free coffee?

Aroma Maya

Let me tell you more about this company.  Aroma Maya is run by Sergio, a twenty-something from Guatemala in the search of good coffee.  He brings in fresh Arabica beans from Guatemala and roasts them right on site at the River Run Golf Course in North River.  They sell the freshly roasted beans on site, as well as other tasty treats in their cafe, which is in the clubhouse at River Run.  They also offer Bistro lunches, yoga classes and snowshoe passes for the winter. All in all, great coffee, great activities and a great place to hang out.

I was pretty pumped when I found out I won a year’s worth of this yummy coffee – as you can imagine if you’re a coffee lover.  I’m a huge fan of companies like this, ones who are doing something worthwhile and giving back to the community, as well.  It’s an easy spot for me to swing in on my way to work to pick up coffee and grab another bag, if I’m out at home { which equates a crisis, just so you know…. }

Aroma Maya

I’ve tried a few different roasts now, and I have to say that the Huehuetenago Highlands is my favourite.  I’m still exploring the difference of the light, medium and dark roasts.  Currently, I’m drinking their Morning Blend, which is quite enjoyable, too.  Now, please be aware I am by no means a coffee connoisseur, I just enjoy drinking it.  Don’t ask me about subtle notes or however coffee people talk about coffee.  I just love coffee.

So, I thought I’d share the love!  Comment on this blog post to be entered in a draw for one bag of coffee beans from Aroma Maya, be sure to include your name so I know who you are!  Yes, I’m willing to share my years supply with YOU!!  Open to Canadian residents only….not sure if I really want to deal with customs and coffee beans….  I’ll make a draw on November 27th and announce it on my social media platforms.

I’m writing this solely because I love their product and want to support them and this is one way I know how….getting everyone to try it and fell in love with it, too….. 🙂

Be sure to comment here, share the post with your friends and maybe you’ll get some free coffee, too!

***UPDATE – Contest is now closed – Eleanor has won a bag of Aroma Maya!!  Eleanor, I’ll email you!***

An Explanation

SunflowerWell, hello!!  When I look back and see that I haven’t posted anything here since the beginnning of September, I’m amazed that that much time has past.  I won’t give excuses.  I’ve been slack, no doubt.

Wanna know what?  I’ve learned something about myself., though.  I always knew that I was the kind of girl that if I started a book, I would finish it.  I don’t tend to quit part way or give up on it.  But, what I have learned, is that if I start a blog post and it’s a hard one to write, I won’t just skip over it….I’ll just avoid it.  I started a blog post a while back and it’s a tough one.  And I have mixed emtions about sharing it.  So, I didn’t write anymore posts, nor did I publish that one.  So, I was stuck in blogger limbo.  No new posts, no nothing!

I attended Blogjam 2016 on the weekend.  It was fabulous to be surrounded by hard-working people who excel at blogging.  Motivating, inspiring, intimadating, too.  But, it was the push I needed.  I need to write here, not just to entertain you, but because this is my chance to document our lives and share my thoughts.  This blog is a chance for me to express myself.

So, I will edit that hard post and I will publish it.  And I will hope and pray that it touches the lives of those who find themselves over here at Farm Fresh.  And then, I’ll write again.

In Blogging

4 Years!

Wow – I can’t believe I’ve been blogging for 4 years now!  Where has the time gone?

shelfie

This blogging journey has highs and lows, weeks of plentiful posts and weeks of silence.  When I started, I blogged almost daily and now, well, I’m lucky if I blog once a week.  I often wonder how much social media plays a part of that…whether I spend too much time on it { I’m sure that can’t be it!! } or if I just will share a quick picture of something fun or new or made-over instead of writing a post about it.

Thankfully, I’d say about 99.9% of my experience of blogging has been positive.  There hasn’t been anything awful happen or any trolls giving me a hard time.  And probably most of the issues I’ve had have been my own fault and more technical than anything.

flower

I think the thing that I enjoy the most is being able to connect with so many people through blogging, whether its because I blog or because I follow their blog and/or follow them on social media.  The blogging conference I attended last year was awesome, too, because I got to meet people in real life and make new friends.  Plus, I learned a lot, gained confidence in my self as a blogger and the influence I have.

For me, personally, blogging isn’t about the numbers.  The people I write to, the people I read, the people I’ve gotten to meet in real life because of this tiny space in the internet – that’s what it’s about.  Yes, bigger numbers help, but they aren’t everything.   More readers and larger numbers would open more doors, true, but I’m not really sure what doors I want to go through.  I love promoting local businesses that I really support in my day-today life, I love sharing my corner of the world, I feel like Nova Scotia has so much to offer, and I love documenting our lives, as the girls grow, as we do neat things and go cool places.  It’s fun to look back over the years and see what we did and how little the girls were when we did it.  I especially love sharing with you the projects I’ve done out in my studio.  Or room makeovers!  Or house tours!!

back bedroom

I feel fortunate to have gotten to make some connections with companies, I realize that’s part of blogging, too….a part I never thought too much about back when I started.  But, as things grow and change, I see opportunity there, too.  Where that will go, I have no idea yet…..we’ll see opportunities arise.

I want to say a huge Thank You, to you, my faithful readers.  You have stuck with me on this journey and I truly thank you for it.  You are the reason I keep at this.  You are the reason I look at life differently.  I appreciate you and the time you give to me by reading what I write.

To be continued,

Lori

PS – I still haven’t come up with a better closing, so 4 years later, I’m still using ‘To be continued….’
