Warrior – Word of the Year 2017

It’s that time again.  Time to talk about what my Word of the Year is!

Warrior

This year, it is Warrior.  Might seem like a strange word to some, especially if they know how much of a non-fighter I am.  I steer away from confrontation every chance I get. So why would I pick a word like Warrior? Am I suddenly going to start fighting? Am I going to turn into a bully?  Will you see me screaming and yelling, throwing punches, trying to get my way?

No, not at all.  In fact, you may not even notice any difference at all.

Warrior for me this year is going to be about fighting for my family, my marriage, my health, my faith, my friends.  The world throws so much at us and it’s hard to fend off the bad and only allow in the good.  I’m going to prayerfully surround my loved ones.  I will stand tall in my fight, but honestly, it will be on my knees.  I am going to go to the One who will fight with me, who only wants the best for me, my family.  There is so much hurt and so much need in my circle of people that it pains me.  And in so many situations, there is nothing I can do….except pray.  Pray for healing, strength, peace and unity for my people.

Warrior

Now, to some, this might seem like a no-brainer.  But, for me, it was like a lightbulb went off this past year and I look back and see just how neglectful I had been in that area.  Thankfully, I have a friend, my pastor’s wife, who has been very good in supporting this and offering her guidance.  Yes, I’ve prayed for my family, my friends in the past, but not like I’m taking this on now.  I feel the need so strongly to bow before my God and plead with Him, thank Him and honour Him with and for my people.

As far as my health goes, I know I need to make more time to take care of me.  I need to get out and run, go to the mountain or wake up earlier to have some time to work on me…. I need healthier choices for my family, I need better planned meals.  Nothing concrete, really, just the awareness that something has to give.  I’m not setting myself up for ‘Lose 25 lbs by the end of March’, that doesn’t work for me.  But making healthier choices across the board does.

When I had decided on my word, I messaged Catherine to see if she would do a watercolour for me with my word.  I saw some great ideas on Pinterest, of course.  But then I thought back over my previous ‘words’ and realized part of the process of making a word my own was the creative process of making the visual reminder.  So, I messaged a ‘never mind’ to Catherine and started thinking about what I could make.

I used a bunch of things from my stash in the studio, one of the benefits of hoarding craft supplies.  Leather from an old cushion, a stick leftover from a Christmas center piece, chip board letters, grasscloth samples and some bits and bobs from my old scrapbooking stash, rounded out with a bunch of paint that I always have on hand.  I didn’t want it too fluffy or too cute, it may not be quite as hardcore as I wanted but it’ll do as my yearly reminder.  Currently it’s hung in our living room, who knows where it could end up by the end of 2017!

Here’s a look back at my words from the past few years:

2016 was ‘Finding Joy’, read it HERE

2015 was ‘Settle’, read it HERE

2014 was ‘Create’, read it HERE

2013 was ‘Love’, read it HERE

I also have a few friends who wrote blog posts about their Word of the Year for 2017.  Christine of Wonkyeye Photography shares her thoughts on Mindfulness HERE and Colleen of Curtains are Open choose Courage which you can read about HERE.

I don’t set resolutions at the dawn of a new year. I pick a word and use it to assess and guide my choices….well, actually, I’m not sure how to even describe it.  The same would go for the selection process, either, I don’t know how to describe the selection, in fact, I would be inclined to say that the word sort of picks me.  So, yeah, I guess this may sound a little wacked….unless you do it, too, then it makes perfect sense!

So, tell me, do you have a Word of the Year for 2017? I’d love to hear all about it!

Finding Joy – A Year in Review

As 2016 comes to a close, I like to look back to see how my ‘Word of the Year’ has affected my life and helped my focus throughout the past year.  2016 was the year of ‘Finding Joy’ { You can read the post HERE }.  And when I set out, I had no idea….

Finding Joy 2016

2016 was a year of change and a year of adjusting.  It wasn’t bad, don’t get me wrong, we had lots of laughter, adventures and fun, too. Life is filled with lots of peaks and valleys, isn’t it? I’m glad my focus was joy, though.  In the midst of new routines and different schedules, it’s good to be able to take in the small details that surround you, to embrace them and dwell on those little things.

Of course, when the beginning of a new year rolls around, you have no idea what to expect and what life may throw your way.  And you pick your Word of the Year not knowing what the future holds, so sometimes the curve balls make it interesting.  When I selected ‘Finding Joy’, I didn’t know I would have to dig as deep as I did this past year to find it.  I rolled into 2016 fairly joyful.  But as the year progressed I had to dig deeper for it.  Life weighed me down.  I was busy, tired and stressed.  So, taking time to note the little details around me made my appreciate everything so much more and focus on the positive things.

Finding Joy

I had started the Facebook group, Finding Joy with Farm Fresh, and I am still thankful for that group.  Other people’s joy makes you appreciate your own and makes you aware of making a point to look for your own joy.  I loved seeing what brought joy into other people’s lives and connecting over our shared joy.  And I love that joy doesn’t have to be over big things, it can be small things like the swirl of frost on glass, the simple bloom of Spring, a note left by a loved one.

Sunflower

I think that regardless of what my word for 2017 is, I will still be ‘Finding Joy’ in the coming year.  I feel like it is an underlaying need/calling/purpose in my life right now.  So, I’ll continue the Facebook group, so feel free to join us and you can always use the #findingjoywithfarmfresh hashtag on social media, too.

So, here’s to 2016,  you helped us grow, mature and learn more about ourselves so thank you.  2017, we are ready to meet you head on, ready for whatever you may bring us.

And stay toned for what I’ve selected for 2017!!!

Skimbaco Projects

I promised you the low down on our projects during our morning at Katja’s and so I’ll deliver!!

skimbaco

Some of the projects are so simple and yet so awesome!  I have a hard time picking my favourites.  Katja was kind enough to provide us with all the supplies we needed to make at least one of each, if not multiples.  I tucked some away to use as gifts, but I did keep a few for myself, too.

skimbaco

This very simple wrap bracelet is a cinch to make, easy to wear as either a bracelet or a necklace!  I made two but I’m thinking the girls would love to make these for their friends, too, they’d make a great gift for girls or girls at heart!

skimbaco

I’m loving my new keychain!!  Again, a simple project but it’s so fabulous!!  Change up the colour of beads, change the leather strap and you can make it a personal gift to give to someone.

skimbaco

The felted wool trees make a great little extra to tuck into a gift or to give someone who you want to do something for but are maybe at a loss as to what to give them.  You can make trees or ornaments with the felted wool, the nice thing is that they are no-sew once the wool has been felted!  Also, a great way to recycle wool sweaters that may have gone out of style or found their way into the dryer before you had intended them to! { You can see a green one in the top photo…apparently I didn’t take many pictures of them }

Now we get into the bath products!  I can’t even get over how simple these were to whip up!  Sugar scrub, bath salts and room spray…a few basic ingredients and you’re off to the races!  It was fun to learn about the essentials oils and the different combinations people used to make their festive scents.  I have used essential oils before, but without much thought as to the actual benefits and not just their smell.  Katja did a great job explaining it all out to those of us who didn’t have much experience with them. If you want to learn more about the oils we used, click HERE.

And the food…..oh the food!!!  Katja showed us the most simple treats to make with puff pastry and Toblerone bars or prune jelly.  They look like a million bucks with the sprinkling of icing sugar.  I think I need to do that more….oh, this cake looks like crap, I’ll just sprinkle some icing sugar on it. Oh, these cookies are boring, I’ll just sprinkle some icing sugar on it. Oh, this meatloaf looks horrid, I’ll just sprinkle some icing sugar on it!!

skimbacoskimbaco

Katja provided us with lots of things, including the tags and jar wraps plus a complete wrapping station to doll up our newly made gifts!  She even sent us home with a Tolberone of our very own to eat! Er, I mean share….

It was a wonderful morning, as I talked about HERE, but part of the reason she did it was to photograph it for her online magazine, us making it all and then the products themselves.  It was certainly fun but the icing on the cake is being part of this!  You can check out her online magazine HERE.

If you’d like more information on any of the projects we did, drop me a line under the CONTACT header, I’ll be happy to answer your questions!!

The Solo Christmas Party

Well, hello!  If you’re popping over from the Christmas party at my fellow bloggers, I’d like to say a special Hello to you!  I hope you enjoy your visit here at Farm Fresh!

Working for yourself has its perks and its disadvantages. Some of the advantages would be getting to set your own work hours, not being ‘told’ what to do or how to do it by your boss or by a nagging co-worker, and  having control over your own business.  But there are disadvantages, too.  It can get pretty lonely slogging away in some dark corner of your basement, you have no one to bounce ideas off of but the big disadvantage is when it comes time to have your work Christmas party.  How does one really embrace the true spirit of a work Christmas party when there is only you?

Well, what you do is throw yourself the most awesome Solo Christmas Party!  Go all out, you are worth it!  There’s no one to tell you the budget limit on the party, what should or should take place, or what party etiquette might require of you.  You can go all in!

Here’s the highlights { and low points } of my work party! I’d like to add here, my shop fairies got involved a little, too…they’re pretty good company and a big help, so, yep, they got to party a bit.

On the note of the shop fairies, one of the things ‘normal’ staff do is exchange gifts, so I left a little gift for my shop fairies.  It was the nice thing to do, even if they leave the broom in the middle of the floor, their unfinished projects lying around the studio and balls of stuffing from all their ‘pillows’ floating through the air and around the floor.  It’s okay, though, they left one for me, too. 🙂 Fair is fair in the office  { read: studio } gift exchange…  I think I did a pretty good job of selection the ‘right’ gift for them and they did pretty well, too!

And for me – fingerless gloves in my favourite colour combo!!

solo christmas party

Some bonding over craft projects { bonding for one…making/creating…sounds a lot like what I do in the studio anyway… } seemed like a good idea until the adhesive that came in the kit didn’t hold and I needed to break out the hot glue gun.  Nothing ruins party morale like a burnt finger or two. So, I did what any disgruntled employee would do….I took a coffee break and scrolled through Instagram.

solo christmas party

Selfies seem like the fun thing to do with your office employees at the staff Christmas party, but since it was just me, I took a selfie with one of the resident racks….

solo christmas party

Don’t I look like I’m enjoying myself?? Hahaha { Only one deer was harmed in the making of the photograph… }

Now, sometimes, at these work parties, it’s a potluck type deal.  So, a potluck, you say??  Typically I bring sweets to potlucks, I love me some sweets…a lot.  So, I brought Christmas Crack for the potluck…made me the hit of party…everyone loves this tasty Christmas treat!!!

solo christmas party

And what’s a Christmas party without Christmas Crackers!?!? I’m loving this birch bark one, I got a box for another function at our local Atlantic Superstore, but saved one lonely one for myself!!  They come with the mandatory lame joke { What’s cold & comes in cans? Chili Beans } a tissue paper crown and a sweet little ornament!  Everyone loves the Christmas Crackers…..maybe a little hard to pop on my own, but I managed….after a little struggle, but whatever, I finally got that satisfactory ‘Pop’!

solo christmas party

I was hoping for Employee of the Year and a sweet Christmas bonus, but alas, this was not my year for either.  I’ll pull up my socks and try for next year!!

Well, I think that might be enough foolishness from me for one day!  I certainly hope you enjoyed yourself, seeing how some of us do the Solo Christmas Party.  Hop on over to see how my friend, Jennifer of Simple Local Life throws a party! Click HERE to go to her blog post.

But before you go, leave a comment on this blog post and you’ll have the chance to win this Warrior Spoon Necklace that I made out in Farm Fresh Studio!  The draw date will be December 23rd at 8pm, so be sure to check back to see if you’re the lucky winner!

solo christmas party

I’ll wrap up by saying that it is my wish to you that you enjoy the holidays, surrounded by those who mean the world to you!  I’ll snuggle those shop fairies and be thankful for what 2016 has brought my way and look forward to what 2017 might bring along, too!

Merry Christmas from my household { and studio and barn } to yours!
