Chatting with Tiny Adventures

Tiny homes are so interesting to me.  And last fall I had the pleasure of meeting Carmen of Tiny Adventures  who is based in New Brunswick, at Blogjam and I thought I would introduce you to her and her partner, Max, so you can follow along on their Tiny Home Adventure!
Carmen and Max are still in the planning and developing stage of their tiny home adventure, but I love reading about their latest project and keeping up to date with any progress.  Carmen is very engaging on social media and I love how you never know if her videos will be in French or English!  Pour a cup of coffee and join me as we chat.
Where and when did the idea start to build a Tiny Home?

Max: Every time I saw or thought about Tiny Houses and alternative living, I thought, “Man, that’s a great idea.”

Carmen: I’m not sure exactly when the idea first started for me, but it was similar to Max. As soon as I started hearing more about the Tiny House Movement, I was very interested in the idea of having that become a reality for myself. It’s only in 2016 that we actually told each other that we were both coincidentally interested in doing the same thing.

What made you decide to build your own over buying one or having someone build one for you?

Carmen: For me, there was no question about it. My dad and his dad built the house I grew up in, and I knew that one day I would ask my dad to help me build my very own house. And the funny thing is, even before Max and I started dating, I always hoped that the two of them would work together on building my home.

Max: I’ve always wanted to build a house, to look at my home and know that I create that from the ground up. And this is probably the only way I’m ever going to be able to afford it, because I’m way too cheap to pay someone else to build it for me.

What are you most excited about in regards to living in a tiny home?

Carmen: Living in a home that is our very own. I can’t wait to have a kitchen that I helped design, that is perfectly functional for me, that meets all my needs. I also love the idea that every single item we own will have a specific place to call home. No more wondering “Where did I leave that?” or “Where should we put this?” There’s only one place it will fit, so that’s the only place it will ever be when it’s not in use!

Max: Saving money, and having that safety net of knowing that I have a home I can always rely on, even when the power goes out, even when everything goes wrong.

What are you most nervous about in regards to living in a tiny home?

Carmen: Personal space. Definitely personal space. I’m worried we’ll argue more because we’re always in each other’s face and we don’t have a place to call our own, where we can each just be alone for a little while. But we’ve already talked about all the things we are nervous about and we’re continuously trying to work towards preventing the worst from happening. For example, we decided I would have a workplace to go to, my little office space, where I could be alone. We also decided that the bedroom will have a door, so we can close it for privacy and a little alone time if the other person is somewhere else in the house. And best of all, we plan on building a garage inside of which Max will have his very own office/tool house to work in and be alone.

Max: Humidity, mold and air quality.

Carmen: You can see we really have two different perspectives about what worries us. Hahah!

Do you have a goal/plan as to how long you’d like to live in your tiny home?

Carmen: We don’t have a set amount of time that we would like to live in it, but probably something along the lines of 5+ years. We’re not exactly sure where life will bring us, but to me, this will definitely be my home and I know I’m going to be extremely attached to it so I might not even want to move out until much later. We’ve discussed having kids in the future, and I can definitely see myself raising a child in our tiny home.

Max: As long as it can support us. But we’re definitely going to keep it forever. When we do decide to move into a bigger home, it will serve as a summer cottage for the rest of our lives.

What are your ‘must-have’ features in the tiny home?

Carmen: The kitchen is my biggest area of “must haves.” I don’t think I could live without a full-sized oven, a full-sized fridge and enough cupboard space for a small/medium-sized stock pile. And a double sink! I never ever want to go back to living with a single sink. Another important feature was the perfect desk, which I actually think I’ve already found thanks to Max’s aunt! We might tweak it a little bit and add a file folder cabinet underneath, but having a good desk was very important to me since I hope to mostly work from home one day. Honourable mentions in this category are an L-shaped couch (I’ve always wanted one, specifically a grey one) and a stackable washer-dryer set.

Max: I need the entire house to be “injury-accessible.” So not wheelchair accessible, but even though you’re injured, you could still easily use every room and every feature in the house. That means no ladder or rock climbing walls.

They offered some more specifics about their current plan for building the home and where they’d like to locate it.  I love the well-thought-out plans they have to insure that they have the room to pursue their passions and to host guests or family in the future, too.

As for specifics about the tiny house, it will be on a trailer with wheels. We went back and forth on whether to get a fifth wheel trailer or just the flatbed, and in the end we’ve chosen to go with a flatbed because we were able to find a better price. The house plan will now be built around the trailer type we chose, and although nothing is set in stone, we’ve decided that we are not doing a loft bed, but rather an actual bedroom on one end of the trailer. We’ll still have lofts, accessible by stairs (not a ladder or a climbing wall as Max mentioned haha!) but they’ll either be for storage (probably) or for extra guests. The couch we plan on buying will also be a bed, and that will be our go-to spare bed for guests before we decide if we actually want to turn the lofts into guest areas.

It’s a long term plan, but eventually we want to be able to run at least part of the house on solar or wind. To start off the plan is to be connected to the grid, but also be using certain propane appliances. We’re currently making payments on our first appliance, a gas range oven, so we’re pretty excited about that.

But we’re still in the planning phases and have lots of work to do so we’re trying not to get our minds set to something too specific so that we can be open to change if it doesn’t pan out the way we thought it would. Currently Max is working on a computer program to design the trailer because we’re buying different parts from different people and we’ll be building it from those parts.

The only other thing that we know for sure is that we want to buy land soon, somewhere up north of Moncton, but fairly close. We don’t want to live more than 10-15 minutes out of the city because we know we’re probably going to be working in the city for a while and it’s not worth the time and gas for us to buy cheaper land further away.

Oh, and another thing that is guaranteed is that Max will have a (very) large garage on the property. We won’t be building anything permanent right away, but we do own a giant tarp garage, big enough to fit the Tiny House into, so we’re hoping to set that up as soon as we buy land. I think it’s fantastic because Max plans on building himself an insulated shed/man cave in there so that we can each have a space that is our own, and also somewhere to get some work done on his many many hobbies that would take up too much space in the tiny house. He’ll also be keeping his 1964 Chevy C10 in the garage, his pride and joy.

Eventually, after we save a bit more money and know that we want to stay on the same piece of land, we’re thinking of building an actual garage and having a live-in suite upstairs, which could be used for guests, potentially be rented out, or maybe to be used as an in-law suite later on. Only time will tell I suppose!
If you want to follow along their Tiny Home Adventure, be sure to follow Tiny Adventures on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter and their blog HERE so you don’t miss a thing!
A special thanks to Carmen and Max for taking some time to chat with us!

MORE in 2018

Here we are, early in the beginnings of 2018.  A new calendar means new goals, new words and a new start.  So, let’s dive right in shall we?

Every year for the past few years, I have a selected a word to focus on over the course of the next twelve months.  Last year my word was Warrior, which you can read about HERE. And to be honest, I have two words for 2018.  Why two?  There is one that is heavy on my heart but it is so personal and private that I can’t lay myself that bare here.  Maybe at some point I can share more but for now, I’ll hold that one close to me heart.  So, for 2018, my word is MORE.

MORE was inspired by the need to look at my life and see what I need more of.  And, logically, the opposite of more is less and there are things that I need less of.  My friend Sam posted a list online the other day and it spoke to me.  MORE seems to be greedy, but once you read through, MORE is exactly it, I need MORE of somethings in my life and I’m going to bet that some of these will strike a chord with you, too. Here’s my list of More!

MORE water, LESS sugar

MORE outside, LESS sitting

MORE God, LESS me

MORE creativity, LESS doubt

MORE adventures, LESS fear

MORE love, LESS worry

MORE scripture, LESS iPhone

MORE reading, LESS Netflix

MORE writing, LESS mindless scrolling

MORE yoga, LESS pudge

MORE space, LESS stuff

MORE grace, LESS perfect

MORE backroads, LESS busy

I do so much without even thinking about it and I waste so much of my time with things that don’t really matter.  I want to be more intentional with my time – the time I give my work, my family, my friends.  I’m glad to sit down and make a list so that I know what I want to focus on.  It’s so easy to get distracted and let other things pull you this way and that.  But, here, here is my concrete list.  Here is what I want to focus on.

I asked my friends if they had a word for 2018.  Alena said her word is NO.  And it’s perfect.  Here’s what she said: “For me this is going to be the year of NO.  Not a positive word but I hope it brings positive change! NO when I can’t, NO when I don’t want to, NO when my plate is already overflowing, NO to being so busy I can’t catch my breath, NO to ‘stuff’, NO to being overwhelmed and stressed out, and NO to giving time I don’t have.”  I can’t wait to watch this pan out and I hope it means she’ll have more time to hang out with me, selfish, eh? 😉

My dear blogging friend, Jennifer of Simple Local Life has a word that makes my heart happy for her – CREATE!!!  She is a self-proclaimed non-creative, so she was excited to share her word with me. “Create products…create experiences…create memories…create income”  I’m so proud of what Jennifer has built since she first introduced herself to me over 2 years ago at the first Blogjam!

Another blogging buddy, Suzi of Confessions of a Fitness Instructor started a private FB group to help with setting goals, whether they are fitness related or not.  You can join it HERE.  And a new blogger friend that I haven’t met yet wrote THIS post about her word SIMPLIFY.

I asked some other people and the words that have been chosen are amazing!!  Surrender, Amplify, Change, Enjoy, Rest, Self-Care….so many good ones!

I’m working out my Farm Fresh goals for 2018 into a concrete list.  I’m not a natural goal setter, so to have an actual, tangible list will be a first for me!  But I’m excited to see where it is all going this year!  Last year was pretty amazing for me in terms of the blog and now that I’ve had a taste of it, I want MORE!!  lol

I’d love to hear if you have a word on your heart for 2018!! Please share it with me!

Looking Back at 2017

We are reaching the end of another year!  2017 is drawing to a close and we’re staring down 2018!  It’s been such an amazing year for us here at Farm Fresh Style and Clear Day Farm! Join me as we look back!

Let’s start by looking back at the most popular blog posts of 2017!

6. Less Than, More Than  Comparison is a tough thing, and so prominent these days

5. End of an Era  When your parents sell your childhood home/farm

4. One Room Challenge – Week 6   I redid the studio over 6 weeks and it turned out pretty fabulous

3. Crazy About Barn Quilts  The coolest thing in the country

2. Tears at A&W   When you’re crying in a fast food joint over the love of strangers

And the top post of 2017 proves you guys love Sheree Fitch and her wildly wonderful dreams as much as I do!

1. Mabel Murple’s Book Shoppe & Dreamery A tour of the best tourist location on the East Coast

The other big thing that I’ve been doing more of is working with brands on the blog.  It’s been fun to reach out to companies and brands that are a good fit for Farm Fresh.  I would never have been brave enough to do any of that without the support of the ECM Media crew.  They have been encouraging and supportive and I can’t even believe the positivity of all the members.  I’ve had the pleasure of working with brands like Canadian Tire and their Premier Paint line {which you can read about HERE }, Kings Landing in New Brunswick { you can read those HERE and HERE } and my new partnership with Phillips & Chestnut, which I’m really excited about! { Those posts are HERE and HERE }  I have some fun things happening in 2018 in the partnership department, too, which you’ll have to be a little patient for!

I love the community over on Instagram and my following there has slowly been growing.  I enjoy the interaction that happens there and the awesome people that you end up connecting with.  I’ve been very fortunate to have a met some of these Instagram friends in real life and they are just as wonderful in real life.  Here’s a look at my Best Nine posts on Instagram:

I love how it pretty much sums up what our country life looks like.  We live in a stunning part of Canada and I love showing it off to my Ins{ta-friends!  {You can follow me on Instagram HERE }

Life here at our farm involved getting a pony { which you can read about HERE } and a new cat over the course of 2017.  They are both great additions to life here and we’re super thankful for Casey K because shortly after we got her, we ended up having to put sweet Cuddles down.  Our little crazy cat lady was pretty upset.  He may have only sort of been our cat but we sure loved him.  { You can read what I mean HERE }

We also had the outside of the house painted!  I was so excited to finally have that job done!!  We had a great crew do the repairs and the painting, I’m so happy with their workmanship!  It has certainly freshened up the place!!  You can read about that transformation HERE – pretty great, eh?

I look forward to continuing to share our country life here with all of you throughout 2018!  I love hearing from you, whether it’s through comments on Facebook, comments on the blog or over on Instagram, so please drop me a line – it means so much!

Here’s to a great 2017 and an even better 2018!

Solo Work Party 2.0

Well, the time of year has rolled around again to the season of work parties.  As a blogger, that can get pretty lonely.  But with awesome blogging friends, it wasn’t quite so bad. Here’s how this year’s party went down!

I dressed up in my finest paint clothes and headed out to the studio.  I had packed a little snack, too, so I carefully carried my plate. I also took out the Secret Santa gift I had bought myself and a little surprise for our new studio cat.  I was ready to party!  { Want to see how I partied last year?  Click HERE }

I walk through the door, turn up the heat and greet Casey K, our pretty new kitten who spends some time in the studio when she isn’t running around like a fool outside.  She expects to be fed so I feed her and give her a few cat treats – Merry Christmas, Casey!  I’d love to get a festive hat on her, but decide not to pick that fight today, I’m still annoyed she destroyed my vintage school map.

It’s pretty quiet.  Too quiet.  Party music, I need some tunes!  I crank up the country songs, sing loudly and dance around a little like I’m on stage.  It’s always short-lived…enough of that foolishness.

Doesn’t the studio look festive with it’s stockings and new lintel?  I hope Santa fills all the stockings for me!

Snacks – must be time for snacks!  I sit down in the comfy chair with my plate of treats and quietly eat it. I grabbed these macaroons after I tried some at Blogjam, but I have to say these weren’t nearly as good! Maybe I could use a cup of coffee to go with that….so back to the house I go to put some coffee on.  Of course, while I’m there I do a few chores, switch laundry, do some meal prep, water a few plants.  When the coffee is brewed, back out I go, warm mug in my hand.

I putter around, doing a little tidying and working on a few last minute gifts.  Why do I always leave everything to the last minute?  I work better under pressure but still…this is ridiculous!!  Painting signs? Now? Ugh!

Maybe I’ll open my gift.  I already got a Secret Santa gift from our blogging crew – will the gift I got myself be better?  It’s hard to top my mug from  My Home Apparel and a necklace from Beck & Boosh that Sara and Brent from Dashboard Living sent my way. Hmmmm – a book by Sheree Fitch!!! Yay!!  I love a good book and we all know how much I love Sheree herself!  I’ll just start reading a little bit here….

…..

…..

{ goes in house for a coffee refill }

…..

….

{ Casey hops on lap for a snuggle and starts purring }

….

….

Oh – wait – you guys are still here?  Sorry!!  I got completely drawn into this book!

Here – you guys check out the links at the bottom of this blog of my blogging friends parties and I’ll just sit here and read!!

Oh, and Merry Christmas!!!

Lori

Blogjam 2017 – Post-Jam Scoop

Well, I think I’ve recovered from an awesome weekend at Blogjam in Halifax.  My head is filled with ideas and my heart is filled to overflowing, too.

See, here’s the thing.  Blogjam is amazing.  Yes, there’s so much information to glean. Like so much information.  But!! Guys….it’s the people that make it for me.  I’m a people person and I like to connect. So Blogjam is like a big reunion for me with a bunch of my online friends.  So many of the people I enjoy interacting with online come to Blogjam.  And these are mostly people that I wouldn’t know now if I hadn’t stepped outside of my comfort zone 2 years ago and went to speak at a conference I knew nothing about, where I knew not a soul.

I could write about 30 or so people but I’m going to introduce you to the ones that impacted me the most this past weekend.  And I’ll apologize for all the pictures of me and that they are all iPhone pictures!!  I did take my camera but came home with blurry pictures of people!

I’m going to start off with Jennifer of Simple Local Life for a few reasons.  First off, we roomed together this year at Blogjam and it’s kind of a full circle moment because we were complete strangers 2 years ago! She came up to me at the end of Blogjam 2015 and told me she wanted to start a blog.  And well, did she ever!  She is rocking it on the South Shore, she has created such a name for herself.  Occasionally we’ll meet up in the city for a meal or coffee when it works into our scheduling so to have time to sit and chat with her this past weekend was such a treat.  She offers a great perspective on all things life and blogging and for that I’m so thankful. Plus, she tells me when to get back on the elevator when I’ve gotten off on the wrong floor…. #countrycomestotown

Saturday night at the social, I had the chance to sit down and chat with Jenna of There’s a Shoe for That.  Her family just recently purchased a house and I can’t wait to follow along as they make it their own. I’m not even sure what all topics we covered but it was so nice to just connect! Her re-cap of Blogjam is awesome, you can read it HERE.  It’s perfectly Jenna and I was happy to hand off my Blunnies for her to capture, too.

Of course, I was thrilled when Colleen walked in.  Colleen has been so good to me, letting me bounce ideas and So.Many.Questions. off her with the patience of Job.  I love Colleen’s sense of humour, her writing style and I can relate to her on so many levels.  Plus, she wears red Blundstones, too, so what’s not to love. You can find her tales over at Curtains Are Open, I highly recommend grabbing a cup of tea or coffee and settling in for a bit, she’s awesome.

Now, this next blogger is kind of a big deal.  She’s the first non-local blogger I’ve met and she is Julie, aka Sober Julie and her blog is Life Straight Up!  I have to admit I was a little star struck but she was so down to earth and welcoming.  Besides, she’s great friends with Colleen, so I knew she had to be awesome.  All weekend long she was handing out these tiny little bottles of essential oil samples from DoTERRA and I haven’t gotten into using oils before but I did follow her advice and put some of the orange one in my water on Sunday.  I had a few chances to sit and chat with her so that was a real treat!

My other major online encourager is none other than Peady!  You may know her as Laureen from Tempered with Kindness.  She is a ray of sunshine and so positive, with a side of funny.  Go follow her wherever you can find her, especially HERE, though.  Tell her I sent you.  She makes my heart happy.  I’ll bet she does the same for you.

I mentioned before that I was doing my presentation with Heather of Heather’s Handmade Life, you can read my mention it HERE.  You need to read her Blogjam post HERE, guys, I wasn’t sure if I was going to end up alone on stage!  She did manage to make it on Sunday and we talked about Creativity and used lots of potty humour….because poop is funny even in your 40’s.  Honestly, I think we offered up lots of great tips on keeping that creativity flowing, even when you aren’t feeling it.  Heather loves to do power point which is great for someone like me who doesn’t enjoy the techy stuff, plus she has great hair and an even better sense of humour so I would highly recommend doing a presentation with her! Plus, our planning session at the new Truro Library made us feel like kinda a big deal with our own private conference room.

The crew that dreamed { dreamt? } up Blogjam deserves an award.  They started out as strangers and now are a pretty tight bunch.  And they are all so lovely, like seriously, they are the best.  Kerra, Renee and Krista make the day so wonderful and are so welcoming themselves, you couldn’t ask for better. And Michelle Doucette could be found all day snapping pictures of the presenters and guests { plus she presented in a special food photography workshop on Saturday night which was AMAZING! }  They make a great team and gathered together some fabulous speakers and sponsors for the event.  The location was incredible, too, I really enjoyed the Prince George with all the lush finishes and rich textures, my only issue was the elevators and that was completely on me….

I need to be clear here, up until to this point, I could’ve gone home and been thrilled with how the weekend went.  I saw lots of my friends, learned some new things and really enjoyed myself.  But…..there’s more.  Are you sitting down? One of the generous sponsors, Sunwing, had donated a week all-inclusive for two to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.  Guys, I won.  When Kerra announced my name, I couldn’t believe it.  And you know me, I cried.  Here’s a picture of Candace of Life In Pleasantville and I after I pulled myself together…

Yes, she’s tiny and I’m looming over her…  I have a whole post brewing about this trip and all the information I need to know about going south!

All in all, another fabulous weekend at Blogjam.  If you are a blogger or thinking about blogging or starting a YouTube channel or anything along those lines, I highly recommend attending Blogjam!

To be continued,

Lori
