My Muumuu

Who knew my favourite piece of clothing would be a muumuu? Who knew I needed a muumuu in my life? Annette. That’s who. She knew I needed a muumuu in my life.

But let me back up to ‘pre-Covid, still hanging out with friends, going into thrift stores’ times. Annette and I made plans for supper out in the town and a trip to our local Value Village. Now, I’m not a clothes shopper typically when I hit up the thrift stores. I do not enjoy clothes shopping. I may have mentioned this repeatedly? But Annette being Annette, made it fun going through the racks. { You can read a little about that adventure HERE } She’d pick random things for me to try on. And I did. I can’t say no to Annette. I’m not sure anyone can. Have you met her??

Anyway, one of the random things she found was a muumuu. And she made me try it on. I’ve never had a muumuu, tried on a muumuu or had anything to do with a muumuu. Except for this one amazing client I had…she would meet me at the door of her perfectly-her home in…you guessed it…a muumuu!!

Here I popping out of the dressing room in the soon-to-be-mine muumuu. I was not convinced I needed yet. It seemed like a dumb thing to buy. What 44 year old wears a muumuu?

Well, once you put it out on the internet that you have purchased your first muumuu, fellow muumuu wearers come out of the woodwork!! One old high school pal informed me she prefers to call them caftans! Sounds way better and yet, I still refer to mine as my muumuu. Want to know what Hannah calls it? My cowcow….hmmmm, thanks Hannah….

Here’s me, enjoying a cup of coffee on my pretty new patio set, in my muumuu. The girls are mortified that I step outside the door in it. But hey, I’m 44 and give zero poops.  Clearly they haven’t worn one yet. I love getting out of the shower, slipping this on until I’m no longer damp or warm from my shower before getting dressed for the day. My housecoat is way too heavy and warm, but my muumuu, it’s perfection!

S’mores, our new kitten, loves my muumuu, too. Pictured above is Monty trying to figure out where that brat kitten went. Where is S’mores? Hiding in my muumuu, of course!!

So tell me, do you have a muumuu? Are you Team Muumuu or Team Caftan?  Do you live it one – leave the house in one?

Lori

Tangled Gardens

We did a Valley road trip this past weekend, just me and a few of my favourite little girls.  We toured around, stayed in a hotel and explored random beaches throughout the Valley.  If you missed my stories on Instagram, check out the highlights tagged Valley 2020 HERE.

As I love to do, I alway ask each road tripee what their favourite stop was.  Tangled Garden was close to the top on everyone’s list, if it wasn’t THE top pick!!

I’m having camera issues, and thankfully I have the best of friends with great gear and so Christine lent me one of her cameras.  It weighs a lot more than I’m used to and I didn’t quite have a handle on the settings, but slowly I’m figuring it out.  So, these pictures aren’t the best I’ve ever done, so bear with me!

There are some beautiful structures throughout the garden, perfectly rusty and being enveloped in greenery.

Tucked in the middle of the garden is the sweetest little Tea Room, seen in the picture above.  It is rustic, but feels very airy and feminine.

I found a few little garden nymphs running around, too…

There was one more but she moved too fast for me to capture on camera 😉

Dark clouds starting to roll in and you could hear thunder off in the distance.  The light really shifted and created an eerie backdrop.  I love how the wild, unruly signage looks against the sky.

If you find yourself in the Grand Pre area, I would highly recommend stopping at Tangled Gardens.  If it had of been open on Monday, the girls wanted to go back and I would’ve gladly taken them.   We went a few years back, but I guess I didn’t share the pictures here on the blog!! There is so much more to see and explore than what I shared here, I even missed places during my visit there as the girls talked about things I didn’t see!

Warmly,

Lori

Beach Bonfire

There’s a FB Messenger conversation that is probably 3 summers old now. It started as an open invitation in our circle of friends to meet at our local beach on Wednesday evenings. Bring your bathing suits, supper, kayak, whatever, just come to say hey or come for a few hours, we’ll see you there kinda thing.

Over the years, it’s still the same basic idea, but not just for Wednesday nights anymore…and we’ve made it to some, missed most but that doesn’t really matter, the invitation remains to join anyone from the group who posts their trip to the beach.

A couple Sunday nights back, Christine posted a trip to the beach with the dangling carrot of a beach bonfire in the group chat. Now, I love a good bonfire, but with the fire ban that’s been barely lifted this spring and summer, I was especially craving a good ole bonfire. And an evening on the beach to boot with friends, I was in!!

We took our usual sidekick, Marley, packed up bonfire supplies and headed to our favourite local beach to meet up with Dave, Christine, Simon and Izzy – everyone else from the chat had other plans. I had a lovely fire going in no time and sat around enjoying the sound of the kids playing before the rest of the crew showed up.

Get ready for lots of beach pictures….

We started with snacks!  A bonfire just wouldn’t be complete without s’mores!!  Is there anything cuter than a kid and a s’more? No, I didn’t think so!

Clearly Izzy takes cookie eating very seriously!

After bellies were full, it was time to play and explore.  The four biggest kids { I’m using the term loosely!! } decided they wanted to go around the point.  Izzy thought she should be allowed to tag along, too, but it’s tricky walking on those rocks!

I shadowed Izzy and we veered off to walk up along the edge of the rockier part of the beach.  We found a stick and she played with it in the sand for quite some time.  It was so fun to hear her chatter away in her play.  She may have fed me a spoonful of sand when I wasn’t paying  close enough attention to what she was actually doing as I tried to get some pictures of her!

The crew come back from around the point all safely intact.  They clearly had big plans as they took off across the sand bar…

We finished off the night with some sparklers, it wasn’t quite dark enough but the kids did not care!!

It was time to wrap it up and take the tired, sandy kids home to their beds.  Izzy was clearly done in and needed a snuggle with her momma!  That makes everything better!

Pack it all up!  Be sure not to leave anything behind!  Especially the cute little ones!!

I hope your summer is filled with trips to the beach with friends!!  If you are in Nova Scotia, there are lots to explore…granted, I think the best beach is also the one closest to us!!

Warmly,

Lori

Explore the Eastern Shore

Another day off, another road trip!!  Canada Day found us in the car, picnic packed and sights set on heading east to take in the Eastern Shore of our beautiful Nova Scotia!

I’ve been to the Eastern Shore before but I haven’t really explored it too much and I was looking forward to seeing what we discovered.  We had no real game plan, just a general direction and the day.

The girls were borderline about joining in and coming along but they did come and even though there were a few spots that weren’t stellar, I think they had fun.  No one got left on the side of the road, anyway, so I’ll take that as a win!! They aren’t fond of being in the car for long, especially now after months of barely going anywhere because of quarantine.  They don’t get puking-carsick, just off-carsick which sucks, I know as I was the same and am probably worse now that I drive all the time and am so rarely a passenger!

Anyway – neither here nor there all that!  Let’s hit the road!

Our first stop was an quick visit to this interesting old garage on the 348…lots of interesting bits and pieces to look at!  We also each had a quick photo shoot in front of an old car.  So, here’s the results – some are more willing than others 😉

Back in the car and further down the road.  We traveled over hills with views of blueberry fields, through woods and small little villages.  Lots of buildings showing their weathered age and history, I’m a sucker for an old house, especially one with weathered wood and lots of stories to tell.  But I refrained from stopping and taking pictures of every old house or barn I saw.

The troops were getting hungry so we stopped at Salsman Provincial Park for our picnic lunch on the banks of the river.  If I have learned anything road tripping with the girls is to feed them when they’re hungry, it all goes so much better!!  And chances are if they’re hungry, I probably need to eat too, if momma is hangry, nothing goes well. 😉

After a tasty lunch under a picnic shelter with a lovely breeze, we took a drive through the campground portion of the park.  We scoped out the best sites for future camping trips.  It’s the kind of park you’d want to bring a kayak or canoe to, as the park is out on a peninsula surrounded by a slow rolling river.  I have camping dreams but I’ll save that story for another post 😉

I’d like to know how many random wharves I’ve been on through the years.  There’s just something about them.  And so, once again on this road trip, we found ourselves on a wharf in Isaac’s Harbour perhaps? I’m honestly not sure!  But they are just so classically Nova Scotian and I will forever stop at wharves and check them out….especially if I’m traveling with the handsome Mr. Byrne.

We stopped randomly at a bridge and explored, skipped stones and had a little fun.  Being right on the Atlantic Ocean meant some of the views were foggy, but that just adds a whole layer of mystic to it.  We could hear the crashing waves just around the bend from our stop.  This is a land of variety, of strength and of rawness.

Back in the car, driving the twisting roads along the shore.  Scrubby trees, boggy woods, and huge rocks again speak to the harsh climate living on the edge of the Atlantic.  It is very barren feeling although you’d take a corner and there would be another little village with a wharf, a post office and a painted white church.  We are tough, resilient folks, us Nova Scotians.

Probably the highlight of the trip for me was Tor Bay { Torbay??? I saw signs spelling it either way }  I’ve never been so I wasn’t prepared for the gorgeous beach, crashing waves and rugged coastline.  Guys, if you haven’t been, please add it to your bucket list!! The laughter ringing out, the squeals of getting soaked, the freedom of running and being a kid will forever be etched in my memory of this place.  There is just something about watching your growing kids be kids again.  The weight of the world was lifted and they just got to be.  It was balm for this momma’s soul.  And thankfully I had my camera so I have proof, so the memory won’t fade.

We hung out at Tor Bay for a while, the girls splashing and ducking in and out of the waves.  After a bit on the beach, we went around the point and I tried to capture the huge spray as the waves hit the rugged shore.  It’s hard to catch just the right sized wave at just the right time and finally I gave up.

Back into the car and down the coast further we went.  We debated going all the way into Canso but ducked inland to Guysborough.  I’d like to get back to Guysborough to explore but Canada Day wasn’t the day.  Another road trip another day to take in Guysborough… and Tracadie!!!

We did hit drive thru in Antigonish for some supper, the troops were getting hungry…again… and I figured that might buy me a little more exploring on the route home, too.  And low and behold, we managed a quick stop at the Cape George light house!  I even found a little toy in the grass and we decided she’d be our road trip mascot!

We named her Rosy! Hoping she may make some future appearances 😉

Last pit stop was Arsaig Provincial Park for a quick walk along a bit of beach and climbed back in the car for the final leg home.

By the end of the day, we were all tuckered out from exploring the Eastern Shore of our beautiful province.  Plus, it checks one of our bucket list items off!

I hope you all had an enjoyable Canada Day taking time to explore, discover and reflect on our country.  We are by no means perfect as a nation but I am still very thankful to be a Canadian!!

Warmly,

Lori

Half Her Life

I have this friend, you may recall me talking about her here once or twice.  Janice? Yeah, her.  Well.  This year marks two major milestones in her life.  One is a significant birthday – yes, she turns 40 this year!!  And the other is that we’ve been friends for 20 years now.  So, according to my math, that means she’s been putting up with me for half her life.

In honour of these milestones, I thought I’d share 20 memories and pictures for my wonderful friend.

1. Very first day of decorating school.  I knew not a soul.  We did class introductions and we both had moved to Lower Sackville for school.  So I decide to get to know her first, figuring she might be as lost and lonely as me.  That first day of school, I invited her to join me for an adventure after class.  We eat pancakes at the Big Stop and explore Laurie Park and that, dear readers, is where this friendship started.

2. I sat behind Janice in class.  She has the longest, most beautiful dark curly hair.  Which required frequent style adjustments during the long school days.  My static pant legs would be covered in her long hair off the floor behind her chair as I stretched my legs out under my desk.  I had short blond hair….there was no mistaking who they belonged to!

3. Middle names came up one day in class.  Our lovely teacher was letting us guess her middle name.  Sweet Janice pipes up and says something along the line of it can’t be as awful as Gertrude.  Guess what Mrs. Kent’s middle name was? Yep, Gertrude.  Janice was mortified.  And I have still to let her live that one down.

4. Janice and I traveled to and from Lower Sackville on the weekends to go home and get a break from school.  I had a cat named Drew that she hated. { How do cats know who hate them and go to them regardless? }  Drew came back and forth with me sometimes and I recall one eventful trip home when my trusty Ranger left us all stranded on the side of the highway…..not one of our best trips home….she still hates all our cats….and bonds with Lena over ways to torture or kill them, all in fun…I hope!!!

5. I love the backroads.  No secret.  So, after delivering Janice’s furniture back to Cape Breton at the end of the school year, I took the scenic route home from CB….lots of gravel roads, probably not enough gas to feel comfortable, lots of memories and of course, no map!!!  I’m sure it took longer than if we actually took the highway but what’s the fun in that?  But, I’m willing to bet she’d still hop in the car and travel some back roads with me!!

6. Graduation Day at The Cohn.  Look how young we were!!

7. After knowing Janice for only a year, I was honoured to be asked to stand with her as she married her best friend, Trevor. Such a fun, beautiful, meaningful day celebrating the love they share.

8.  At some point, Janice and Trevor lived on PEI.  Michael and I loved to go over for the weekend to visit with them.  One trip, we stopped by and Janice made us lunch.  Still to this day, those sandwiches she made us are the best sandwiches we’ve ever eaten.  Not sure what made them so tasty, must’ve been that they were made with love!!

9. Janice stood with me, pregnant with Wyatt, when I married the handsome Mr. Byrne.  My favourite memory from that day was waking up crazy early and sneaking out of the house with Janice to go get cinnamon rolls at Tim Horton’s.  Then we went to Sobey’s and bought pumpkins and sunflowers to decorate the front step of the church.  Sitting on the front steps of that sweet church with her will be forever etched in my memory of that day.

10. Janice and I have different decorating styles.  But I love the homes she creates for her family.  You can see pictures HERE, HERE and HERE.

11. Going to Cape Breton is always a favourite way for me to get away.  It’s the perfect change of scenery.  And Janice has such a gift of making each visit special and makes you feel as though you matter the most.  She spoils me rotten in other words.  You can read about a few trips HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE and HERE.  { I see there are some sideways pictures….not sure why…I’ll edit those later…. } Sometimes she comes to me….which you can read about HERE.  She always does such a good job of taking care of me, I hope she feels the same when she comes to visit me!!  She’s my favourite person to host!

12. Janice’s friends in Cape Breton have become some of my friends, too.  I love how welcoming they are.  And they are game for a roadtrip to support me in some of my endeavors, too.  This picture is from my Homegrown Vintage Market when a carload of them drove down to spend a few hours shopping the market.  I’m so thankful to know that Janice is surrounded by amazing friends.

13. Sugar Moon is our top pick for a place to eat….you have to take a picture in front of the fireplace every time!!!  The best memory of Sugar Moon was when we each had a baby in a car seat, the snow was softly falling outside the window, the coffee was hot….ahhhh, it was perfectly peaceful and relaxing.

14. Janice and I both love to hunt for great treasures.  We have walked the aisles of antique stores, thrift stores, the lawns of strangers at yard sales and even an estate sale that will forever be etched in our memories due to the colourfully carpeted bathrooms….  We even had one of our road trips featured in the magazine I write for!  You can read it HERE.

15. Friends – no matter the season!!!

16. I love how Janice loves the girls.  She always welcomes them with open arms, makes sure they feel loved and spoiled, too.  She teases them, wrestles them and will swing in the trees with them.  Janice has a houseful of boys so she loves to do girlie things with my girls, like painting their nails or braiding their hair.

17. Back in our school days, sometimes we would skip school to go on adventures.  I recall hiking Cape Split with Janice and a few other fellow students and then there was the time we went to the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in the middle of a snow storm, typical adventures, right?

18. One of the things I love the most about Janice is how she is there for me to celebrate the highs,  grieve the losses and talk about everything in between.  No matter the time of day, I know she’ll be there for me.  I feel loved and heard with her.  We have cried tears of sadness, laughed until tears ran down our checks, hugged long, prayed hard and loved each other unconditionally for 20 years now.  She’s got my back not matter what.  And I don’t see that ending anytime soon.  I know we will be little old ladies getting into mischief with our canes and walkers.

19.

20.  Janice is the best at sending mail.  I love going to the mail box and finding a beautiful card { quite often made by Simone } with a handwritten, thoughtful note in it.  The note will always make me smile and usually make me cry.  I have a saved them, they feel too important and special to toss.  When I’m dead and gone, my girls will find a box of notes from Janice and know just how well she loved me.

This marks 20 years of friendship.  And 40 years of the world being blessed by Janice.  She loves fiercely and protectively.  She fights for the underdog.  Her home has welcomed numerous foster children regardless of the fact she has 4 of her own boys and they have each been prayed over, loved and snuggled as if they were her own.  And grieved for when they leave for their new life.  She loves her momma, admires her father, prays for her family.  She is a Proverbs 31 woman and holds her faith in utmost importance.  I am so thankful for the 20 years she’s played such an important role in my life and I look forward to at least 20 more.

Happiest of Birthday, my dear friend.  I love you more than the words of this blog post could ever say.  Your are a treasure.

Warmly,

Lori
