Waiting

We have lost the ability to wait.  We suck at waiting.  Waiting is too hard so we don’t want to do it.  We want it now.

I’ve been thinking a lot about waiting lately.  We live in a society where we don’t wait for anything.  Our drive thru experiences tell us just how terrible we are at waiting.  Amazon’s delivery options tell us just how bad we are at waiting.  Try waiting at the doctor’s office or at outpatients…you can clearly see how we can no longer wait.

How long did the Israelites wait in the desert before being allowed into the promised land? 40 years, people, 40 years.  Could you wait 40 years to get what was promised to you? What you’ve waited your whole life for? 40. Years.

I’m learning to trust God’s timing.  I think life would be easier if He gave me my heart’s desires NOW.  But, He’s telling me to wait on Him.  And I’m trying really hard to be ok with that, to trust He’s got this figured out and He knows the plan.  Clearly I don’t know the plan, I can’t figure out why things aren’t happening the way I want them to.  Wouldn’t it be better if these things happened sooner rather than later?  Ohh, but would I learn to wait? To Trust? No, these are clearly lessons He has for me, lessons I need in my life.  Waiting.  Trusting.  Being obedient. So tough but so worthwhile.

As a society, we miss so much that life has to offer because we’re so focused on the next thing or the thing we want.  Life is happening around us but we can’t see it because we’re looking ahead.  Looking ahead to when this situation changes, to the weekend, to vacation, to when you get a promotion, to marriage, to babies, to wealth, to health, to a new car, to falling in love, to a prettier house, to the next paycheck, to the bigger boat, the better job, to being 5, 10, 20 pounds lighter, to the next iPhone, to whatever!!  And we miss the here and now.  We don’t appreciate what we have in this moment.

I’m by no means saying I’m a good ‘waiter’….just hang out in our home when we’re all trying to leave on time….I’m not patient, I’ll admit it.  I’m usually the first one ready and I have to wait for everyone else and I’m not good at it.  I want what I want, what I think I need or what I think might be the answer to whatever problem and I want it now.  I’m no different from you.

I need to take a step back, take a deep breath and wait.  I can’t figure it out on my own, I can’t make things happen, I need to wait for God’s plan, God’s timing.  I’m seeing that now.  It took far too long for me to get here.  Psalm 27:14 says, “Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.”

It isn’t just waiting for things to fall into place that requires my waiting, sometimes I need to wait before I respond.  I’m quick to respond with a sharp tongue or in anger.  And I need to just wait, think a moment.  And then maybe respond, or check my response and reel it back so it is more gentle and less hurtful.

Waiting really is an important life skill.  And I am more aware of ‘waiting’ now then ever.  And so, I’ll wait…

Lori

When the Sun Shines

The time has changed here in Nova Scotia, and I’ll be the first to admit that it kicked my butt.  I was exhausted.  I hated waking up in the dark again.  But I certainly did enjoy the lighter evenings.  So when a sunny Saturday arrived, I just wanted to go for a drive.

I’m not sure what it is about the early Spring weather that makes me want to hit the highway.  I would love to stay home all winter long.  If the weather was the lest bit bad, I just wanted to be under a blanket.  But, the sun has changed it’s glow and it’s time to explore again!

Saturday evening, it was time for a drive.  We didn’t venture far.  Just to Caribou Island.  The sky was blue, there is still ice in the strait and thankfully they paved the road at some point or it would be a mud bath for the car.  Not that that has ever stopped me from going on a drive!

The lighthouse at the end of the island looked so stark against the blue sky.  It was so perfectly Nova Scotian.  I think I may want to hit as many Nova Scotian lighthouses as I can this summer.  They are just so interesting, historic and scenic.  All things we love to explore.

We stopped at Waterside beach but the seaweed had taken over the beach and we just had a quick peek at the shore and turned around….besides, we didn’t want to disturb the couple that has found a sunny, quiet spot to enjoy their evening, either.  Beaches in March tend to be a lot more private and it felt wrong to evade.  Besides, the girls wanted to run on the boardwalk. And I wanted them worn out for bedtime.

When we left Waterside, we headed down the Sunrise Trail.  The light had changed and the sky glowed with an eerie yellow light and the rain started to hit the windshield.  Lena spotted a huge, vibrant double rainbow so I pulled over and turned to capture it, to no avail.  It’s just always better in person.  And it was way too big for one camera frame.  But you get the idea.

Since it was the day before St. Patrick’s Day, finding a rainbow to dance under, to think on the promises God gives us and to just appreciate all that we have seemed perfect.  It was a great way to spend a Saturday evening.

Colour – Green

This month we’re going to look at the colour Green in honour of St. Patrick’s Day!  The handsome Mr. Byrne has some Irish blood so this is a nod to his roots.  And a nod to one of those classic colours that is always in style in some various shade, tint or tone!

I enjoy the colour green and have it throughout my house and have had it throughout all our homes, in fact.  It’s timeless, easy to live with and surprisingly, it goes with so much.  In our first home in Caribou River, I painted the main living area Grasslands by Benjamin Moore and thought I might be limiting myself for what other colours I could bring in, but I found I loved it paired with other greens, pinks, oranges – all sorts of colours, it wasn’t limiting at all.

Our bathrooms are both green now, along with our laundry room, it is the only real colour we have on the walls, as far as paint goes.  And it’s restful and pretty in those spaces that don’t allow for much other colour.  I don’t mind it in the bathrooms but I’m looking forward to painting the laundry area – it hasn’t been painted yet!  But that’s been talked about HERE.

The most green we have in our home is all the plants.  So many plants.  But I’m not complaining one bit.  I love all the plants in our home.  Yes, they may be taking over….again, I’m not complaining – but I do feel like I need to rein them in a bit.  Anyway,  I love the fresh, vibrant pops of green they bring to whatever room they are in.  Plants just add so much life to a home.

Did you know that green is considered to be the most restful colour?  It promotes unwinding but isn’t too cool, it has warmth to it that keeps it comfortable.  That makes it the perfect colour to relax in.  Of course, a bright, florescent green isn’t quite so relaxing….

My favourite green item in our home has got to be this old Hickory Chair Company chair I got at a local yard sale for $10.  It was a hideous gold when I bought it, and eventually I recovered it in a green stripe and I have to say, it’s the most comfortable chair in the house.  It currently lives in our pyjama lounge and you can quite often find me reading or writing this very blog there.  And the desk chair here is green, too.

I also have a pretty little bowl from my grandmother, Lena, that is green and loaded with texture.  I inherited it when she passed away and I love and treasure it.  Such a simple, small thing and yet…

There’s green in the verandah, too – the floor, the chairs at the table, lots of little bits of green.  You can check it out HERE.

Miss Mustard Seed makes some fabulous greens – Boxwood and Luckett’s Green are both beautiful greens I have used.  In fact, the desk chair I mentioned is even painted in Boxwood!!

Anyway, I’m off to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with the handsome Mr. Byrne!

What’s Your Style?

Descriptive words used to describe your style are my favourite.  I so enjoy meeting with clients and talking about what their style is and how they want their home to feel.  Words get thrown around like modern, causal, retro, comfortable, cottage, farmhouse, country, urban…I could go on.

Hi, It’s been a bit since I was here!  Life has been busy and honestly, this time change foolishness is kicking my in the butt.  But I’ve been thinking about this a lot.  Can you define your home’s style?  It’s fun to start throwing words around.  I’ve nailed my current style down to Boho Vintage Farmhouse.

I’ve talked a little about Boho in the past, you can read it HERE.  I love Boho because anything goes.  It tends to be colourful and have a very gathered feel to it.  Loads of texture, plants, and natural elements and rich in stories.

And it’s no secret that I love vintage goodies.  They are fulled with such character.  I love chippy paint and furniture that comes pre-worn so that I don’t have to worry about keeping it perfect and pristine, because let’s face it, I want to live in my house and not treat it with kid gloves.  I love pieces with history and age, that have stood the test of time and are still around now.  If it has dings and dents and is older than I am, chances are that I’m keen.

And well, farmhouse, we live in an old house and even though I don’t believe this was ever a working farm, we’re in the middle of farming country and it has all the ‘farmhouse feels’.  White siding, beadboard, back staircase, old wide trim and well-worn hardwood floors – sounds farmhouse to me!  We’re surrounded by old farmsteads and fields.  And since we have our own version of a farm going, I’m running with the farmhouse feel.  There are things in this house that have had previous lives in a barn…

I used to be a kitschy country primitive girl but over the years my style has definitely changed.  Weathered sheep and cutesy signs and plaid galore was definitely my past way, I need to find those pictures of my first place and share them here.  As we mature, it’s common that our styles would change, too.  I still have some pretty strong country feels happening but it is a style that I think has matured with me.

Back when I did some teaching and presenting on decorating, I always talked about personal style.  And I still believe that today, I can make your home magazine worthy but if it doesn’t suit you and reflect who you and your family are then I have failed as a decorator.  I want to walk into a home and touch items that have a story and a connection to you.  I want to use things that matter to you, not just whatever was on sale at the box store furniture place by the highway.  And not just a reflection of one family member, the whole family.  That’s why you’ll find antlers throughout my home and pictures of horses, too….because even though I am the decorator in the family, everyone lives here, too.

So, let me ask you, how would you describe your style?  Are you country cottage with a flair for shabby chic?  Are you clean-lined and modern with a minimalist leaning?  Or are you a maximalist with treasures on every surface and tucked into every nook? I’d love to hear about your style!

Lori

Best Peanut Butter Cookies Ever

*This recipe is a huge hit everytime I make it so I thought I would update my old post from back in the old Blogger platform days!*

Let me set the scene.  Your friend called, she’s on her way over with her children.  You have no cookies in the house and very little baking ingredients and even worse, no chocolate chips!!  Gasp!  What do you do?  You whip out these three things and make the best Peanut Butter cookies that ever were.

They are crazy easy!  And so yummy – raw or cooked!

Quick Peanut Butter Cookies

1 Beaten Egg

1 cup White Sugar

1 cup Peanut Butter

Yep, that’s all.  This is not a misprint, there really is no flour.

The dough should look like this – perfect for rolling!

Mix these together, roll into balls.  Feel free to flatten with a fork like your mother and grandmother did.  A Peanut Butter cookie tastes better that way.  Stick them in the oven for 18 minutes at 350*  They say it makes 2 dozen, I have yet to see that happen but that might be because I like them before I cook them, too!

This is all that is left after the company left!!

Enjoy!
